Food Poisoning IV Drip in Khao Lak

A food poisoning IV drip in Khao Lak can help when vomiting or diarrhoea makes it hard to keep fluids down. A registered nurse comes to your hotel room, villa or home, checks how unwell you are, and gives fluids by drip only if it is suitable. Most food poisoning settles by itself with fluids and rest, and some symptoms need a doctor rather than a drip, so we will always tell you honestly which applies to you.

Who this drip is for

  • Adults with a short-lived stomach bug who are struggling to keep drinks down
  • Travellers who feel drained and mildly dehydrated after a day or so of vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Guests who would rather rest in their room than travel while feeling unwell
  • People with none of the red-flag symptoms listed further down this page

Whether you call it a gastro IV drip in Khao Lak, a stomach bug drip or a diarrhea IV drip, the approach is the same: a careful health check first, and a drip only when it makes sense.

Try this first

For most people, drinking is enough. The NHS guide to food poisoning says most cases get better within a week, and the main thing is to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

  • Take small, frequent sips of water if you feel sick
  • Ask a pharmacist for oral rehydration powder to mix with water, which replaces lost salts
  • Avoid fruit juice and fizzy drinks, which the NHS says can make diarrhoea worse
  • Eat plain food when you feel ready, and rest out of the heat
  • Wash your hands well, and don’t share towels, to protect the people you are travelling with

If you keep being sick and can’t hold fluids down, that is when a drip may be worth considering, after a proper health check.

What’s in it

Drips like this commonly contain:

  • IV fluids: sterile fluid that goes straight into a vein, which may help you feel rehydrated faster when drinking is difficult.
  • Electrolytes: salts such as sodium and potassium, which are lost through vomiting and diarrhoea.
  • Anti-nausea medicine: only added if the nurse or doctor decides it is suitable for you, after checking your health and any medicines you take.

This is general information about drips of this type. The nurse will explain exactly what they recommend for you before anything starts.

How it works

  1. Message us. Tell us your symptoms, how long you have had them and where you are staying. Message us to check today’s availability. If anything you describe sounds like a red flag, we will tell you to see a doctor instead.
  2. Health screening. The nurse asks about your symptoms, what you have managed to drink, your medical history and medicines, and checks signs such as your temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
  3. The drip. If a drip is suitable, the nurse uses sterile, single-use equipment and stays with you the whole time. Ask the nurse how long your drip is likely to take.
  4. Aftercare. Keep sipping fluids afterwards, eat plain food when you can and rest. A drip doesn’t replace drinking, so carry on with water or a rehydration drink for the rest of the day. Stay out of the midday heat, and skip alcohol until you feel fully well again. The nurse will explain which symptoms mean you should see a doctor.

Who shouldn’t have this drip

A home visit is not the right place for every stomach illness. See a doctor or go to hospital instead if you have:

  • Blood in your stool, or vomit with blood in it or that looks like coffee grounds
  • A high fever, or severe or constant tummy pain
  • Signs of severe dehydration: very little or no urine, dizziness on standing, confusion, a racing heart, or pale, grey or blotchy skin
  • Symptoms lasting more than a few days, or vomiting that stops you keeping any fluid down for a long time
  • Symptoms in a baby, young child, older person or someone who is pregnant
  • A heart or kidney condition, diabetes, a weakened immune system, or regular medication you haven’t checked with your doctor

In an emergency, such as difficulty breathing, fainting, severe confusion or collapse, call 1669 or go straight to hospital. If our nurse finds anything worrying during screening, they will not start a drip and will help you get medical care.

Food poisoning IV drip Khao Lak FAQs

Do I need a drip for food poisoning?

Usually not. Most food poisoning settles with rest and fluids by mouth. A drip may be worth considering if you can’t keep drinks down and have no red-flag symptoms, and the nurse will help you decide.

Will a drip stop my diarrhoea?

No. A drip replaces fluid and salts, which may help you feel better while the illness runs its course. It doesn’t remove the cause. If diarrhoea goes on for more than a few days, see a doctor.

Can my travel partner have a drip too?

If they are unwell as well, yes, as long as their own screening shows it is suitable. Each person is checked individually.

Can children have this drip?

Children with vomiting or diarrhoea can become dehydrated quickly, so they should be seen by a doctor or at a hospital rather than at a home visit.

Can I go diving or on a boat trip afterwards?

Give yourself time to recover first. A recent stomach illness can leave you dehydrated and tired even once the worst has passed, and that matters at sea or underwater. Tell your dive operator or tour company that you have been unwell, and ask a doctor if you are unsure whether you are fit to go.
